Prepare Your Windshield Wipers for Winter
16th Sep 2014
Your windshield is an important safety feature of your vehicle, protecting you from the elements that would otherwise come rushing at you while you are driving. But safe driving requires more than just a windshield – your windshield wipers and washer fluid work together to keep your view through your windshield clear. As we head into the fall color season, now is a great time to think ahead to winter and prepare your car for winter driving.
Prepare Your Windshield Washer Fluid Reserve
Not all windshield washer fluid is created equal, and winter temperatures require a washer fluid with a low freezing temperature to prevent problems. This is very important because, if your washer fluid freezes, it can crack and damage your reservoir. And if you try to pump washer fluid from an empty reserve, you could overheat your washer pump, leaving it inoperable.
Switching to the correct seasonal washer fluid requires you to drain any standing fluid from the reserve. At this point, it’s a good idea to go ahead and flush out the reserve. Start by opening the reserve and pulling the hose straight down and off with pliers. The washer fluid will drain out the bottom, so have a catching pan ready.
Once all of the standing fluid is drained, use a garden hose to rinse out the calcium buildup, and scrub the inside. Replace the windshield washer hose correctly before filling with a winter washing fluid. Just like any part of your vehicle, an occasional flushing is good for your washer fluid reserve, and helps it to last longer and work better.
Get Your Windshield Wipers Ready for Winter
Now is the perfect time to replace your windshield wipers to make sure they are ready for the coming snow. Order your Everblades Heated Windshield Wipers to keep snow and ice from building up on your wiper blades this winter. If you are already using Everblades, check to see if it’s time to order a replacement kit. Everblades have been proven to work quite a bit longer than your average windshield wipers, so you may not yet need replacement wipers.
Even if you aren’t replacing your windshield wipers, it’s important to check them over before winter. Make sure they are wiping properly and aren’t showing signs of deterioration, like brittle or cracked blades. Wipe each wiper blade down with a clean cloth to remove built up oil and grime. When you are satisfied your windshield wipers are in good working order, move on to your windshield washer fluid.
